La Biennale di Venezia and Cartier have announced that British director and producer Ridley Scott (“Alien”, “Bladerunner”, “The Martian”), will be awarded the ‘Cartier Glory to the Filmmaker Award’ at the 78th Venice International Film Festival. The award is dedicated to a personality who has made a significant original contribution to contemporary cinema.

Ridley Scott is one of the foremost directors and producers in the world — and he is no stranger to awards. His illustrious career is marked by monumental films such as “Thelma & Louise”, “Blade Runner”, “Alien” and “Gladiator”. The latter film won the Academy Award, Golden Globe, and BAFTA Awards for Best Picture. Over the years, he has also been lauded by the Emmy Awards, Cannes Film Festival, and the PGA Awards.

The awards ceremony for ‘Cartier Glory to the Filmmaker’ took place on Friday, September 10, 2021, in the Sala Grande, before the screening of Scott’s upcoming film, “The Last Duel” starring Matt Damon, Adam Driver, Jodie Comer, and Ben Affleck. Scott was awarded a trophy designed by the Maison Cartier.

Director of the Venice Film Festival, Alberto Barbera, praised Scott, saying his “personal approach to genre films, which successfully reconciles the expectations of the general public and the demands of critics, is the most distinctive element of Ridley Scott’s filmmaking.”

From 2021, Cartier will partner with La Biennale di Venezia to become the main sponsor of the film festival. As part of this collaboration, the Venice International Film Festival and Cartier will pay tribute to outstanding filmmakers through the ‘Cartier Glory to the Filmmaker Award’.

This new collaboration with one of the most renowned international cultural events builds on the Maison’s long-lasting commitments to preserve cultural heritage and support contemporary artistic creation.

“Ridley Scott has enriched the world of cinema with his productions since the 70s and has unequivocally become a mainstay in contemporary artistic creation,” said Arnaud Carrez, Chief Marketing Officer of Cartier.

Scott has another film set to release in the United States later this year, “House of Gucci”, starring Lady Gaga, Adam Driver, Jared Leto, and Al Pacino.
